The leading driver of the upward trajectory was the sprits category which logged its biggest volume increase since 1990, finishing the year up a white-hot +4.6%. While vodka is still the top seller, it is projected to be overtaken by whisky by 2022. That is due to whiskey growth outpacing vodka on the back of growth of +4.9%. Single malt Scotch was down -6.1% down due to tariffs, and Irish whiskey was impacted by on-premise closures finishing down -0.5%. But those declines were more than covered by growth in Japanese, Indian, and American brands. Decanter’s January 2022 „Top wine Trends for 2022“ listed the average consumer’s „inability…to afford“ wines from Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Champagne.

In fact, data from the University of Buffalo found that United States alcohol sales increased by as much as 20% to 40% in some states during the pandemic (while, notably, beer sales declined). Retail alcohol sales from March to September 2020 totaled $41.9 billion, a 20% increase over the same period the year before. It’s safe to say people were drinking quite a bit more than they were pre-pandemic.

The ownership of alcohol brands is highly concentrated among multinational alcohol giants that have built up their market position through mergers and acquisitions. In many markets, for example in US states, Indian states, and Europe, the alcohol industry lobbied governments to deregulate alcohol availability rules to allow alcohol delivery – making alcohol even more ubiquitous. Breweries, distilleries, bars, and restaurants shifted rapidly to direct-to-consumer shipping and takeaway services even for alcohol.

When we look at gender differences, we see that in all countries, men have a higher alcohol consumption than women. While not exactly a „flavor,“ packs of multiple flavors were the most popular, followed by iced tea-flavored hard seltzers and black cherry. IWSR indicates that „RTD growth has slowed does gabapentin help you sleep due to a highly saturated hard seltzer segment.“ The following table contains data from two sources with consumption statistics segmented based on age range/generation. For this project, we tapped into the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Expenditure Survey which is conducted each year.

The year saw a reversal in the volume declines from previous years seen in the wine category. While imported wines grew +2.5%, the tariffs placed upon certain EU states by the Trump administration saw growth from markets not affected by them. One area of interest was low-alcohol wines which doubled their volumes in 2020, with many major brands entering the category. The growth rate for all other varietals reported decreased between 0.9% (Sauvignon blanc) and 16.9% (Sangria).

Anheuser-Busch InBev accounted for 21.2% of of these drinks, from which they earned $2.2 billion. Spirits- and beer-maker Diageo also sold 11.1% of the beverages youth drank – and, since liquor tends to be more expensive per drink compared to beer, earned $2 billion from underage drinking. In a new paper published on June 9, 2021, my colleagues and I combined our survey data with the latest information available about alcohol consumption among adults to estimate the percent of all alcohol sold in the U.S. that was consumed by young people.

Not all forms of alcohol experienced the same increase or post-pandemic decrease in sales. For instance, beer and wine have experienced different sales trajectories from hard alcohol.

In 2016, this would have amounted, for example, to $78 million from Anheuser-Busch InBev. The only other metropolitan area to spend as much was Minneapolis, although other Midwestern urban areas also had strong drinking cultures. While the growth rate for vodka was less than that of the other four liquors, sales by volume accounted for 78.1 million 9-Liter cases. In contrast, the sales volume for cocktails/RTDs, the next largest category, was 36.6 million cases. The billions these companies make from underage drinking is money that the prevention field could really use. A system, independent of the industry, that would collect and allocate these unwanted revenues could be a better way to get it to local communities and help reduce and prevent underage drinking. Going out for drinks is part of many people’s social lives, young and old, but it can potentially develop into a costly problem in multiple ways. For one, regular drinking can turn into a dependency, or what some people describe as functional alcoholism, giving individuals the belief that they’re in control even when they aren’t.
